The First Surfers

"The First Surfers" is the original first chapter of the first couple of editions of Volume 1 of LEGENDARY SURFERS, in portable document format (PDF), originally published in 2003 and again in 2005.

Since then, we know much more about the settling of the Pacific than we did when I originally wrote the chapter; thanks mostly to DNA studies. Please note that the very beginning of this chapter contains some errors that were later corrected in 2022 in the post "Austronesians" https://legendary-surfers.blogspot.com/2022/06/polynesian-beginnings.html - Please visit that post for the best perspective on how it all began, then continue on with the original chapter which still holds up.

Chapter 1 of Volume 1 in PDF form consists of a total of 15,425 words (887 kb), 5 pages of footnotes, images, and hyperlinks to other relevant material both within the LEGENDARY SURFERS website and elsewhere on the Net. With the exception of what I've noted above, information contained in this eBooklet remains the most concise, detailed and free information available about the earliest days of stand-up surfing on wooden boards available anywhere. Again, please note some historical inaccuracies that were later corrected in the online chapter segments concerning Polynesian origins and Austronesian voyaging.
